PAINT SWATCH WALL

WEEKEND PROJECT: Painting the feature wall at Lola's

BEFORE: Lola's Wall of Frames - Friday afternoon

This past weekend, if you were in Lola's you  may have noticed the 'Under Construction' area. A favorite, the Wall of Frames, was dismantled and the feature wall was prepped for a new master piece.

Under Construction

Erik Olson, co-owner of Lola's, was selecting paint a few weeks ago for one of his current projects. "I was looking a paint swatches, trying to decide on a color to use - and that's when the inspiration came to me!" he said.

Pulling inspiration from a paint swatch.

Friday, he patched all the holes left behind from the 'Wall of Frames', then measured and taped off three sections using Frog Tape.

Saturday, after the store closed, Erik began the chore of painting. He chose three shades of yellow from a paint swatch. He primed the wall and rolled the walls. The bright color took a few coats to cover, but dried nicely.

By Sunday afternoon the painting was completed and dry. Erik then added the paint color names with vinyl lettering, similar to what you would find on a paint swatch. He hung a few gold frames to reflect the light and the project was finished.

Sunday Morning

The wall was revealed Monday morning to customers."Its a bright and fun idea for spring." says Stacey Olson, of Lola's. "The wall serves as a focal point whenever anyone enters the store. Customers have commented today on how great the wall is! You really have to see it in person to get the full impact. Its amazing!"

Paint color names are in the corners, just like a paint swatch.

DOOR AS ART

I am crazy for barn-style sliding doors and regret that we don't have the perfect spot for one in our current house.
(The humanity!)

For some reason, I recently remembered seeing photos of a barn door, complete with cool sliding hardware, hung as ART in one of the HGTV Dream Homes!  I errantly thought it was this year's Dream House, but as it turns out, it in last year's family room.

Look at the color of that sectional!  That's just about the happiest color ever, and yet, I would never be brave enough to buy a huge piece of furniture in apple green!  Would you?

Just down the alley from our bungalow there is this neglected and somewhat sad-looking garage.  But look at those doors!  What treasures they are!  With the HGTV Dream Home door as my inspiration, I am now dreaming of hanging them, complete with sliding hardware, as ART.  Of course, the old chippy white paint stays!  I'd paint the wall behind them a dark gray to make the white doors pop.  I think I'd also hang a picture light above to wash across them.  What do you think of the idea?  Is it out of your comfort zone?  Or would you think of it as the "wow" feature of your decor?

FREE BOOK

CELEBRATE WORLD BOOK NIGHT
 April 23, 2012

"It has been said a million times before, but its till true: no one finishes a book the same person as when they started, whether filled with a new understanding of life or just happier for the hours lost in good story... There are few gifts more precious than sharing the love of a good story with someone else."

- Carl Lennertz, Executive Director , World book Night U.S.

And we, at Lola's, agree!

World Book Night is organized to spread the love of reading and books. The goal is to see tens of thousands of people share books with others in their communities across America and to spread the joy and love of reading on April 23, 2012... 6,000 towns and cities to be exact!

Successfully launched in the U.K. in 2011, this year will be the first Book Night in the United States! World Book Night is non-profit organization and is a combined effort of America’s book community: authors, agents, publishers, librarians, distributors, shipping companies, printers, paper mills, and book stores across the U.S. One such location is Lola’s, a retail book and gift store, located downtown Morris, IL.

Lola's is honored to be selected as one of the official Book Giver locations. The store is thrilled to offer the community a chance to participate in this national program! While supplies last, make ANY purchase at Lola's and you will receive a FREE book. All that is asked in exchange for the free book is once you are done reading the book; you pass it along to another person - asking them to do the same once they have finished the book. Together, we can inspire our community and those across the United States to rediscover their passion for reading!

A panel selected thirty titles to be included in this event, and a million combined copies of World Book Night editions have been printed. Lola’s has two World Book night selections available. The Glass Castle and A Reliable Wife. “The Glass Castle is personally one of my favorite books. It’s a remarkable true story of an unbelievable childhood. It truly shows we can weather any type of upbringing and determine our own course to become whoever we want to be when we grow up.” says Stacey Olson, owner of Lola’s.

The Glass Castle
by Jeanette Walls

The Glass Castle is a remarkable memoir of resilience and redemption, and a revelatory look into a family at once deeply dysfunctional and uniquely vibrant. When sober, Jeannette’s brilliant and charismatic father captured his children’s imagination, teaching them physics, geology, and how to embrace life fearlessly. But when he drank, he was dishonest and destructive. Her mother was a free spirit who abhorred the idea of domesticity, and didn’t want the responsibility of raising a family.

A Reliable Wife
by Robert Goolrick

With over 900,000 copies in print, Robert Goolrick’s #1 New York Times bestselling novel A Reliable Wife is a riveting historical story of love, madness, and obsession that tells the story of Ralph Truitt, a wealthy businessman who advertises for “a reliable wife”; Catherine Land, the deceptive woman who responds; and Antonio Moretti, Truitt’s bastard son. Lushly romantic, yet dark and mysterious, this intoxicating debut—which moves from Wisconsin to Italy to Chicago and to St. Louis—is a classic tale of suspenseful seduction, played out in a world that seems to have gone temporarily off its axis.

Lola's is open Monday thru Saturday 9am - 7pm and is located 126 E. Washington Street, Downtown Morris, IL. This unique store carries a variety of books and gift items for all ages. The store is connceted to Gigi, a trendy women's clothing store. There really is something for everythone at Gigi & Lola's. Stop in for your FREE book and celebrate World Book Night with us!
